Here at the Workplace Cleaning Solutions Commercial & Office Cleaning office, we have switched to using height-adjustable desks. This has made a massive impact on the way we feel about ourselves and without doubt, has improved our health. One of us has seen a reduction in their blood pressure and another in their sciatic symptoms, which is unbelievable.
Get up and move around
We all know how we feel after a day sitting down at our desks and sometimes even eating at your desk too. Often I have to think if I have got up at all!
Studies have shown that sitting for long periods of time can actually damage health, and is linked to a greater risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
NHS Trial
Some researchers have even compared it to the ill effects of smoking and now the NHS is running a year-long trial assessing the benefits of height-adjustable desks.
So getting up and walking about with a phone or going to talk to another colleague across the room, rather than phoning them is a great start. However, if you are lucky enough to have a very forward thinking boss like we do (thank you Ann Brebner!) you may find yourself with a state of the art desk. One that with the switch of a button raises itself up to standing height.
Vary how long you stand up
Health professionals say that alternating between sitting and standing throughout your day; standing for 70% of the day and sitting for 30% will help increase concentration and productivity so it’s a no brainer for businesses to start to consider.
Lots of people spend months off work due to back pain and will benefit greatly from this type of support. It doesn’t always mean a new desk either. At Workplace Cleaning Solutions Commercial & Office Cleaning offices the same desks were used but with new mechanical bases, which caused less disruption and reduced the overall cost.
Maybe it’s Workplace Cleaning Solutions Commercial & Office Cleaning to put a brochure in front of your bosses nose?
